Commuters, others groan over S’East roads

Governor Peter Obi Of Anambra State

The deplorable state of federal roads in the South East is now a source of worry to residents and commuters in view of the length of time and inconveniences encountered while plying them.

Meanwhile, the Mopamuro Council of Kogi State has begun the rehabilitation of a section of the deplorable Obajana-Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road.

Also, President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has reaffirmed his promise to rehabilitate the dilapidated Obajana to Kabba section of the Obajana-Kabba-Egbe road, in Kogi State.

The situation of the roads which has worsened following incessant rainfalls and leaving with it dangerous potholes include the Enugu-Onitsha highway, Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port-Harcourt expressway as well as Enugu-Abakaliki highways.

A journey from Port-Harcourt to Enugu that previously took about three hours now lasts five hours and more under difficult terrain.

In fact, motorists plying the Enugu-Port Harcourt highway now make a detour at Ihube before Okigwe through the Abia State University to connect Umuahia from the Abia State tower.
The Enugu-Onitsha highway is not left out as motorists meander through several routes in an attempt to beat the deplorable road to Onitsha.

The Guardian, which travelled through the road from Enugu to Umuahia at the weekend, discovered that several commuters no longer ply in the night for fear of being stuck in the muddy road.

Dangerous potholes dot the entire stretch of the road while gullies have developed in certain areas.

The ugly situation has been compounded by several trailers and other vehicles that either get stock in the mud or break down while attempting to manoeuvre the road and in the process block it completely.

Liaison Officer 1 of Mopamuro Council, Chief Folorunsho Daniyan, while speaking during the flag off of the repair in Mopa, headquarters of the council, at the weekend, said the council decided to rehabilitate the road despite being a federal road because it had become impassable.

Thus, he explained further that the council, supported by the community, decided to think in an uncommon way to ameliorate the suffering of the road users “and also because the pride of Mopamuro was at stake.”
He disclosed that as a way of saving costs, the council supplied laterite, granite and grader, while the community supplied labour.

The Deputy Governor Yomi Awoniyi who flagged off the project, said the state government was pursuing seriously the plan by the Federal Government and Dangote Cement Company to repair the Obajana- Kabba to Egbe road.

He commended the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) for awarding and mobilising the contractor for the construction of the collapsing Kabba bridge.

Dangote reiterated his pledge when he visited Lokoja, Kogi State capital at the weekend, to commiserate with victims of the recent flooding from the overflow of Rivers Niger and Benue, which has rendered thousands homeless in the state.
