Ex-militants Donate N52.7m to Flood Victims

 As victims of the recent flood disaster in the Niger Delta continue to count their losses, ex-militants in the oil-rich region under the Pressidential Amnesty Programme have donated N52,716,000 to help assuage the losses inflicted on the victims by the floods.

Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Hon. Kingsley Kuku, who disclosed this Tuesday, said the 26,358 amnesty beneficiaries in Phases One and Two of the programme agreed to donate about N2000 each from their October 2012 allowances to alleviate the sufferings of victims in Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers States.

Head, Media and Communications of the Amnesty Office, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, in a statement, disclosed that staff members of the Presidential Amnesty Office also donated between 20 and 30 per cent of their October allowances to support the efforts of the federal and state governments on the flood situation.

Kuku commended the amnesty beneficiaries for their selfless and humanitarian gesture.
“This is very commendable as it is a practical demonstration of the African spirit and tradition of being your brother’s keeper in times of distress,” he said.

Kuku, the statement added, had constituted an 18-member flood relief committee comprising key stakeholders in the amnesty programme and volunteers.

The committee is headed by the Technical Assistant on Reintegration, Mr. Larry Pepple.
The committee will procure the necessary relief materials and liaise with the various state governments in ensuring the distribution of the items.
Kuku, who is also the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, is equally billed to pay a courtesy visit to the governors of the affected states.
