Oshiomhole dismisses four teachers over absenteeism, lateness

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday dismissed four secondary school teachers and sanctioned one other for absenteeism and lateness. The governor, who paid an unscheduled visit to some schools in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, said the attitude of some of the teachers was not encouraging, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

While calling for support from the teachers, the governor said his quest to reposition public schools was not negotiable.

He said teachers must look beyond earning their salaries and bringing up children that would be useful to the state and the country.

He warned school authorities that the government would not hesitate to dismiss any teacher found wanting in the job.

The governor warned teachers against improper dressing to schools.

“I’m afraid if the attitude currently being displayed by teachers is allowed to continue the state will not only be in trouble but the country as a whole.

“We expect the teachers not only to take their job seriously but inculcate in the students values that will change the society for the better.

“We believe that if we must appreciate the value of fine structures we are building in public schools across the state, the teachers should be able to play their part.

“This does not translate to abandoning their jobs but resuming early for work and showing good example by dressing properly to work,” he added.

NAN reports that the teachers sacked included one from Ekhei Girls Secondary School while the others were from Our Lady of Fatimah Secondary School.
