Standard Organization of Nigeria today reached out to youths and other standard bodies worldwide to underscore the importance of youths, as leaders of tomorrow, in the preservation of the culture and consciousness of standards in the nation.
The event which had the theme: “Less Waste, Better Results- Standards Increase Efficiency,” was aimed at celebrating the World Standards Day.
In a key note address by the Director General of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Doctor Joseph Ikem Odumodu, stated that the youths needs to know some of the aspirations guilding SON conduct as governments and as government agencies.
“Sub-standardization is something that concerns every Nigerian and everybody who uses products and services. It is something that affects our present and would also help to define our future.”
Furthermore, the DG, stressed that Nigeria looks up to the youths to present its country with future models, which would stand on the side of truth, to support worthwhile crusaders as the SON is spearheading.
“If the goods we produce are not of standards, it means we are jeopardizing lives; if the services we render are sub-standard, it means they would not deliver the service that we expect them to deliver, and so any money paid to obtain such a product or service is wasted.”
Moreso, Mr. Joseph, admonished the youths to continue to spread the message that our country should not be a dumping ground for products that are substandard.
According to him, “decide to crosscheck any product you want to buy, whether it has the SON mark of quality, and if not, refuse to buy, and finally, encourage your parents, friends and others around you to do the same,” he added.
He also added that the youths can also think about forming Standard Clubs in their schools, through which they could pass the message on, and be sure of the SON support in that regards.
The Director General also stressed the need for setting October 14th, of every year as World Standards Day, which according to him is a day celebrated internationally to recognize the efforts of the thousands of experts whose work revolves around standards.
“Standards are developed by experts from around the world, based on contain internationally known best practices, which can be used to measure and compare efficiency and safty, thus saving lives and also reducing material wastes.”
He stressed that the job of SON, is to encourage industrialization, which enhances the growth of an economy and also helps in creating employment for the youths.
“The bad product has a way of closing the good one out of the market, but endeav our to lookout for the good one.”
In analyzing the strategic response of SON, the DG, stated that consultative stakeholders meetings with Freight Forwarders, Market leaders, NACIMMA, LCCI, SMEs, MAN sectoral groups, ASPAMDA, Balogun Brothers and others; launched a ZERO TOLERANCE campaign and sustained its surveillance on those behind the import and distribution of substandard products.
In his closing remark, Dr. Joseph Ikem, gave the assurance that SON will continue to fight the war with all its capability to ensure that substandard goods are reduced in the country to a minimal level.
“SON sues for your continued support and collaboration. Together, we can bail our country from the scourge of substandard products.”
“Let’s join hands to say no to all those undermining our lives and our economy through their trades in substandard products.”
