Wole Soyinka and the Lagos State government To Host Kuramo Conference 2012

Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, in conjunction with the Lagos State government will host the ‘Kuramo Conference’ in Lagos, Nigeria, in November 2012.

The Conference seeks to provide a cerebral yet accessible platform for the intersection of law, public policy and non-governmental advocacy, and then promote the products of that collaboration as tools for local, national and international development. The theme for this year’s edition is “The Global Commonwealth”. It will focus on corruption, power, knowledge economies, and the creative industries.

The maiden edition of the conference was in 2010 and was chaired by Justice Emmanuel Ayoola. Prof Wole Soyinka takes over this year and has said that the Conference must seek to develop a blueprint for the modern state in terms of development, and at the same time preservation of ecological resource.

The Kuramo Conference has multidisciplinary ambitions – it will attract bright minds and experts from diverse fields of human endeavour to brainstorm on issues that have the potential to effect far-reaching transformation of the human environment, education, and knowledge.

The knowledge economy is crucial to the vision of the Kuramo Conference; the conference will therefore be devoting one of its sessions to the question of ‘knowledge’ – the sort that produces lasting development – within the context of Lagos, Nigeria and Africa. The module themed “Development Infrastructure: Creating a Knowledge Economy” will explore ways and means of understanding, mapping it and creating/recreating a sustainable knowledge economy.

The Kuramo Conference is wholly committed to the idea that it is the responsibility of a state to protect its citizens, and the right of every citizen to expect the impartial and uncorrupted administration of law enforcement by the state.
