Heads of Public Schools To Sign Attendance

By Sodiq Oyeleke

Heads of public primary and secondary schools in Ogun State have been ordered to always sign attendance register daily.

State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Segun Odubela gave the order in Abeokuta while monitoring the resumption of public primary and secondary schools across the State for the 2012/2013 academic year.

The Commissioner, who bemoaned a situation whereby it is only teachers that signed the register, observed that the school heads were not laying good examples for their subordinates to follow.

“You (the school heads) should lead by examples. When you come on time and sign the attendance register accordingly, your staff will have no choice than to come early and do the same thing. No teacher will like his head teacher or principal to sign before him, “Odubela maintained.

The Commissioner had earlier warned that tough sanctions await principals and head teachers of public secondary and primary schools who fail to commence academic work and distribute textbooks to students within the first week of resumption.

However, he commended heads of schools visited for settling down and commencing academic work on the first day of resumption, charging them to ensure that books are distributed to the students within the week.

The Commissioner, who was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Dr. Tunji Abimbola, visited St John’s Anglican High School, Kuto, Methodist High School, Ogbe, Igbore High School, Igbore and Unity High School, Ago Ika.

They also visited St Peter’s College, Olomore Premier Grammar School, Ayetoro road and two private nursery and primary schools.
