Rampant Divorce Cases Worry Kano Government
Widespread divorce cases in Kano State has become a source of concern to the state government, leading to the formation of a committee of Islamic scholars to fashion out measures to tackle the menace.
“We are worried as a government that divorce cases have reached an alarming rate”, the state’s acting governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said yesterday during the Sallah homage visit to Government House by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.
Ganduje said that the committee of Islamic scholars was set up to help the state government come up with a lasting solution to the problem in view of the prevalence of divorce cases.
“We want to come up with some measures but we don’t want to have a clash with the position laid down by the Qur’an and Sunnah of the prophet”, the acting governor said.
He said the state Hisbah Board had done a lot in terms of marrying off unmarried young girls, widows and divorcees, noting that the board was set up by the state government to provide services to the people according to Islamic teachings and not to function as a tool of campaign for the state government.
He said that the state government had planned to encourage the pursuit of education among its people and make it the bedrock of development.
